Today our Words of Wisdom artwork comes from Amy Pettifer…enjoy!
Describe a bit about yourself and your work?I’m a librarian by day but a writer as much of the rest of the time as I can manage! I write mainly about art and am really interested in the malleability and mixture of critical theory and prose-based writing styles. I make collaborative text work with several artists and contribute to various journals and zines. I’ll be finishing my MA in Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths later this year.
What are your words of wisdom and why?I approached this project by thinking about words of wisdom and why we might gather them together. The idea seemed to be about passing things on, imparting wisdom and ideas - I also thought the form of the postcard was quite potent. There is a lot of discussion in post structural philosophy about the problems of communication, the idea that you might send something out into the world but that it might be lost or misinterpreted. We all face these problems as technology gives us speed and convenience but in other ways increases the distances between us - things become less personal and context is lost…
So, my words of wisdom are about being mindful of this and going to great lengths to make yourself heard, to make your point and to connect. I liked the form of the self inking stamp too as it’s something that can be repeated with emphasis (almost) perfectly, time and again.
Who is your role-model?I admire anyone who can make an honest, creative life happen these days. Everyone is under pressure and it seems impossible to avoid some kind of compromise. However, it has also created a more genuinely collaborative and generous artistic community I think. I am inspired by curious, intelligent, conscientiousness people who make brilliant things with passion but without behaving like dicks.
Upcoming projects?I’ll be writing my MA dissertation this summer which is going to be about pop music, video art and the apocalypse; then there will be issue 2 of a zine called Tappa Tappa Tappa which I make in collaboration with the artist Jessica Harby; also a bit of music making and a foray into radio if I can find the time!
